The Lloyd W. Rypkema Memorial Quarter Horse Award offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for youth ages 13–18 from SD, ND, WY, MT, & NE to apply to receive a gifted Quarter Horse colt from the Rypkema and Hunt families.

This meaningful award honors the legacy of Lloyd W. Rypkema — a South Dakota rancher, veteran, and community leader — by investing directly in the next generation of horsemen and women. Each year, a deserving youth is selected to receive a quality-bred colt, providing not just a horse, but a foundation for growth, responsibility, and lifelong horsemanship.

The 2026 award colt, Reba Wonder, was bred by Hunt Quarter Horses, a program widely respected for producing sound, athletic, and good-minded horses built to work and compete.

Eligible applicants must be ages 13–18 and reside in South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, or Nebraska. Applications are due January 26, 2026.
The Rypkema and Hunt families have been honoring Lloyd W. Rypkema's memory by annually gifting a colt in his honor.

Lloyd, a Pennington County, South Dakota rancher and businessman passed away in 2010. He served in World War II, raised cattle and horses in Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota. He was community-minded, serving as a county commissioner, school board member, a member of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association, Rapid City Chamber of Commerce, and the Pennington County Fair Board.
